ROBERT FORSTER - THE NEW ALBUM
Nearly two years after the death of his long-time writing partner Grant McLennan, Robert Forster will break the silence on 04 April with another masterpiece. The Evangelist is a powerful mixture of past Go-Betweens brilliance and a daring reach into the future, all overseen by Grant's spirit. The album is a stark picture of Forster's recent struggles and his will to persevere after a tragic loss. The songs daringly run the gamut of emotion and arrangement; 'Demon Days', co-written with Grant McLennan shortly before he died, is a spine chilling journey into the deepest reaches of Forster's mind. 'Pandanus' and 'Did She Overtake You' are lively juggernauts that delightfully reprise the rhythmic tensions of Spring Hill Fair. He's not alone on his journey. With him are producers Mark Wallis and Dave Ruffy, of the Go-Between's Oceans Apart, the remaining members of the Go-Betweens, and familiar collaborators; bassist Adele Pickvance and drummer Glenn Thompson. The combination of Forster's genius and a little help from his friends makes a unique and truly special album.

HNY2U!
May it bring fantastic music along with more sanity for the world?
What's next on tuition?
On February 02nd we will set sails to explore "The Opposite Side of the Sea". The ship's captain Oren Lavie will take us on a fabulous cruise with eleven stops along the way.
On March 03rd we will have a "Last Sight of Land" together with the wonderful Dana Schechter and her crew "Bee And Flower", later on we reach a "Checkpoint" somewhere between Ireland and India, built by The Unseen Guest. Here is some more info to give you a brighter picture:
A wide landscape locked in a small room
"Life is not always deep, mostly it's just random. But it's different in art. In art you can choose to show some things and hide others. And suddenly there's meaning to find in the chaos." Oren Lavie's journey to recording his debut album has been chaotic and often random, stretching for over 3 years, across 3 continents and through the cities of Tel-Aviv, London, New York and Berlin. But when you listen to the finished album you'll find that randomness begins to show reason and chaos plays in perfect order. The album's semi-acoustic arrangements, which seem to arrive from an imagined time, frame the world of each song like a portrait painting or a scene from a short story. Oren's striking, rich voice delivers his lyrics calmly and with dry simplicity which underlines song writing of unique language and a surgical accuracy of rhyme. As his own producer he makes deliberate choices to play with the listener's expectations, always challenging what we are conditioned to recognize, gradually tempting our ears to zoom in and discover the big in the small.
"Her Morning Elegance" the first song on Oren's album is the theme song for the new German PrimeTime TV Series "Verrckt nach Clara" (more info: www.prosieben.de/spielfilm_serie/clara/ )
------------------
Bee and Flower's cinematic sound weaves a dynamic combination of intimacy and subtlety, delicacy, power and release.
The unusual songwriting is filled with surprising melodic twists, and the carefully orchestrated instrumentation comes into full focus when paired with Dana Schechter's smoky, emotive vocals. From the delicate and minimal, to dense ominous crescendos, the sounds stay with you long after the music has stopped.
Dana's newest songwriting reached a completely unique realm; blending aspects of Chicago blues with Eastern European classical music, both lands which tied to her families' heritage. Producer Toby Dammit heard this unusual recipe and utilized his own classical and electronic arranging style to explore these musical possibilities in the setting of today's Berlin. Upon their arrival, they reached out to both young classical musicians studying in the city, as well as a hierarchy of Berlin's avant-garde underground.
Working closely with veteran engineer Ingo Krauss (known for his work at Conny Plank Studios, Kn), the core group of Schechter, Miller and Dammit enlisted drummer Thomas Wydler of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds.
Initial recordings took place in the former 1953 DDR radio and television broadcasting center located outside Berlin's eastern frontier, while further tracking was done on location in train stations, warehouses, hotels and apartments all around Europe. In all, the record took one year to complete.
The journey's result is "Last Sight of Land", featuring a 25-piece string section, a whirlwind of grand pianos, a mammoth 'bass section', a maze of vintage electronics, delicate melodic percussion, guitars, lap steel, and sweeping vocal choirs.
"Last Sight of Land" features many special musical guests, namely drummer Thomas Wydler (Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds), guitarists Kristof Hahn (Les Hommes Sauvages, Angels of Light, SWANS), Peter Von Poehl (Doriand, A.S Dragon) and Beate Bartel (Liaisons Dangereuses).
Dana Schechter has worked as a bassist for Bertrand Burgalat, Keren Ann, April March, and Angels of Light. Toby Dammit's credits include working as a drummer/percussionist with Iggy Pop, Rufus Wainright, SWANS, Bertrand Burgalat, Stephan Eicher; Roderick Miller has worked as a keyboardist with April March and Richard Ruin.

Check-in:
Meanwhile the most modern of us have arrived in a semi virtual world in which everyone can be connected to anyone else and in which the blank spots on maps have long since disappeared. This is not the place to discuss whether humanity has become happier and wiser as a result. After all, we are merely concerned here with a small, if beautiful, bit of music.
The Unseen Guest's second album Checkpoint, confirms that even more. In addition to the Leonard Cohen cover "Everybody Knows," with which Checkpoint concludes, it is filled with their own compositions of classical songwriter pop. The thoroughly amiable, relaxed mood that this subtly rocking acoustic sound produces is equally at home in Tucson, Arizona, in California, or in Brisbane, Australia.
The songs on the album radiate familiarity, dependable rhythms, and sincerity. A simple, fine melody, strophes, refrains, good lyrics - in essence no more is necessary, and the voice displays no pathos, no agitation, and the songs no sensationalist ornamentation or distortion. Checkpoint is self-confident and well balanced, and that accounts for much of the pleasure of listening to it.
Musical elements that clearly derive from Indian music are far more subtly concealed than on their first album. At times the bowing of a violin seems excitingly foreign. At times you feel it in the clear, calm human beats. The sounds heard here are to the programmed and sampled sounds heard everywhere what the sound of silence after a tropical rain is to the dripping faucet in the dirty kitchen of an apartment share.
"So sing along now before the thrill is gone now
Grab this conga line that leads to who knows where . . ."
(from "Conga Line")

Hello Guys!
Short before the sun will dry out my brain, here is what's happening in our small part of the world: The Unseen Guest just recently finished recordings of their yet untitled second album, which is scheduled for release in early 2007.
No need to tell us now you think? Well, hold your horses. The respected Putumayo label just released another beautiful compilation titled "Blues around the World" We are honoured that "Listen My Son" from The Unseen Guest's first album "Out There" is the opener on this beautiful travel through the world of Blues. For more details click here: www.putumayo.com.
Up and coming: "Hotel Alba" is the title of the third album by Enders Room, a steady project held led by saxophone player Johannes Enders from Weilheim, a really totally boring small city in the south of Munich. But you probably have heard the names of acts like The Notwist, Lali Puna, Couch and Console which are all based, or have their origin, in Weilheim. Johannes does belong to this circle of friends as a key figure saxophone player. He played on several records of The Notwist, he is a member of the exciting jazz `n dub collective Tied & Tickled Trio and since 2002 he runs his own project Enders Room. Hotel Alba is to this day his most accomplished work. Breaking down musical boundaries, Enders Room is POP, JAZZ, ELECTRO and great SONGWRITING at once. In stores: September 19.
What else?
Roddy Frame is about to embark for some German shows in September. Confirmed dates are to be found in our Tourdates section soon.
The Winnebago Orchestra just recently had a lovely feature on BBC2.
Jeb Loy Nichols will start recording his follow-up to "Now Then" in August. Rumour says it will be more stripped-down. Roots oriented with a folky atmosphere.
We are working on a Go-Betweens songbook, which should be released before December. The songbook is a project that started as an idea last November, when the band played their second German tour for "Oceans Apart". From a nice conversation in a restaurant it turned soon into a serious project. Robert and Grant were total into it and provided us with ideas and enthusiasm. No one dared to think that all our activities and plans were put on hold after Grant McLennan's untimely death. The songbook will add another chapter to the fantastic Go-Betweens legacy.
Let me use this chance also to say Thank You to all of you who wrote us after the heartbreaking news of Grant's death reached them. Your words really meant much to the remaining band members, relatives and to us. Thank You!

Ged M wrote in soundsxp.com about "That Striped Sunlight Sound": "It's forever galling to think that they'll always be a cult band, despite producing some of the finest music over the last couple of decades; when U2 CDs are being ground up for motorway ballast (please God, make it soon), the Go Betweens will still be there as examples of elegant, erudite, classic pop music and this DVD suggests that will be the case for some time yet."

The German Rolling Stone, Dec. 2005 announces as follows:
25 Best Albums Of 2005: # 6 The Go-Betweens - "Oceans apart"
10 Best Concerts Of 2005: #6 The Go-Betweens - Hamburg - Fabrik
10 Best Songwriter Of 2005: #6 Robert Forster & Grant McLennan
5 Most Gay Moments Of 2005: #3 The Go-Betweens
Here we have to quote the originial Rolling Stone words:
Ein echter Go-Between eben." Rolling Stone 12/2005
Please have a look in our shop on the cover of "Finding You" and google on CocoRosie / Images ;-).
